Students may soon choose between thesis and internship, Ministry proposes

The Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic plans to introduce more flexible university studies that will allow for the combination of different forms of teaching to be considered when recognizing credits. Students will also have the option to choose between completing a final internship or writing a thesis. The form of the thesis would be determined by the university, considering the specifics of the relevant field of study. This is according to a draft amendment to the Higher Education Act, which the ministry has submitted for inter-ministerial review.

In the area of quality assurance, there will be a change in the way members of the Executive Board of the Slovak Accreditation Agency for Higher Education are appointed. Nominations are to be replaced by a selection process designed to test knowledge of quality assurance processes, with two students and employer representatives also serving as board members. The ministry also intends to revise the role of the president of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The amendment is scheduled to take effect on September 1, 2026.
