Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) spoke with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Tuesday about Eurozone leadership and the proposed EU ban on Russian gas imports from 2028.
Fico said he supported Spain’s candidate for leading the Eurozone, but warned that Slovakia cannot back the EU’s 18th sanctions package against Russia without firm guarantees from the EU to minimise the impact of losing Russian gas supplies.
He noted that Spain understands Slovakia’s concerns. On Monday, Fico had a similar call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, also focused on gas and sanctions.
