Opposition leader Michal Šimečka (PS) has criticised the proposed amendment to the Act on Political Parties as an effort to reshape Slovakia’s democracy in a way that would allow Prime Minister Fico to consolidate power.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Šimečka warned that if the amendment reaches Parliament, Progressive Slovakia would fiercely oppose it.
The amendment is set to reduce state subsidies for smaller parties which, according to Šimečka, would threaten free political competition.
The Ministry of the Interior has submitted the proposed amendment for interdepartmental review.
