Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) announced he is expected to meet Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in the autumn, likely in September or October. The statement was made during the public radio programme Sobotné dialógy (Saturday Dialogues) on STVR.
Fico ruled out a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stating there is currently no reason for such talks. He emphasized that dialogue with the Ukrainian prime minister is more relevant at this time. Preparations for a new round of government-level talks between the two countries are reportedly underway.
The Prime Minister reiterated Slovakia’s support for Ukraine’s European aspirations, noting that EU membership for Kyiv could bring more benefits than drawbacks for Slovakia—if all required conditions are met.
Commenting on the upcoming meeting between President Pellegrini and President Zelenskyy, Fico said it would be largely symbolic, as the Slovak president holds no executive power.
Fico also confirmed a recent phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, initiated by the Israeli side. Netanyahu reportedly sought Slovakia’s position on matters related to the EU–Israel association agreement.
