President Peter Pellegrini signed key legislative changes on Thursday. From August 1, media in Slovakia must comply with a reintroduced right to correction, allowing individuals to request free publication of corrections to false or incomplete claims that harm their dignity or reputation. Media outlets must publish the correction within 30 days of the original claim and designate visible contact details. Specialized court panels, or "press senates," will handle related disputes.
Separately, new rules simplifying procedures for foreign nationals' residence will take effect on July 1, 2025. The amendment removes the need to submit proof of financial security and photos with applications. These can now be verified later or collected via biometric data. The validity of national visas for securing residence permits is extended from 90 to 120 days. The Interior Ministry says the changes aim to reduce bureaucracy and ease the burden on police departments handling foreigner affairs.
Pellegrini also approved a salary increase in the education sector. Teaching and professional staff will receive a 7% raise from September and another 5% in January 2026. University staff will see two 7% hikes, while a new pay scale will apply to non-teaching school employees.
