Slovak President Peter Pellegrini briefly met with U.S. President Donald Trump during a NATO summit, where they discussed potential cooperation on building a new nuclear power unit in Slovakia. Pellegrini also held bilateral talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, inviting him to an international education conference in Bratislava this November. He informed Starmer that after the war in Ukraine ends, Slovakia could provide logistical and technical support to NATO forces, according to a special TASR correspondent.
Pellegrini spoke with Trump before the leaders’ session, informing him that Slovakia is close to a final decision on constructing a new nuclear energy source. Slovakia is interested in collaborating with the United States and the company Westinghouse on the project. Trump reportedly received this news very positively and emphasized continuing negotiations, expressing strong American interest in the cooperation.
The Slovak president also met Starmer bilaterally for the first time. They discussed the final text of a declaration, noting Slovakia and Britain’s joint effort to extend the timeline to reach the agreed defense spending target of five percent of GDP annually.
Pellegrini invited the British leader to an international conference on education and artificial intelligence, to be held in November in Bratislava in cooperation with the OECD. He expects several world leaders to attend, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Pellegrini also informed Starmer that Slovakia is ready, after the war in Ukraine, to serve as a logistical and technical center “for possible needs of NATO or British armed forces that could operate from Slovakia within a peacekeeping mission.” He reminded that there are currently three logistics centers on NATO’s eastern flank—one in Slovakia, and others in Romania and Poland.
