The future of the Košice steelworks is uncertain. The plant has been definitively acquired by Japanese investor Nippon Steel. Employees, experts, and the Ministry of Economy believe this could bring positive change to eastern Slovakia. However, the new owners face investments worth hundreds of millions.
It took a year and a half for the two steel giants – Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel – to finalize the deal. The acquisition was very costly for the Japanese, who paid nearly $15 billion. U.S. President Donald Trump ultimately approved the transaction, but only on the condition that the government would acquire a golden share, allowing it to veto key decisions, such as the closure or shutdown of U.S. Steel's existing production facilities in the United States.
Meanwhile, there has been no mention so far of the U.S. Steel plant in Košice. The steelworks has not commented on the transaction.
