President Peter Pellegrini has urged Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas-SD) to review Slovakia’s petition legislation to help prevent potential fraud. Pellegrini’s appeal follows a controversial petition calling for a referendum to reject sanctions against Russia, which he declined to declare due to constitutional flaws and serious irregularities.
Pellegrini proposes several changes, including adding a non-public identifier — such as a citizen’s ID number — to petition forms and introducing possible sanctions for violations during signature collection. He also calls for the legal use of advanced data-processing tools and stronger cooperation between the President’s Office and the Interior Ministry to verify the authenticity of signatures.
