UN to open regional centre for urban development in Slovakia

Slovak Vice-premier and Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS nominee) has signed an agreement in Geneva with UN Deputy Secretary-General Anaclaudia Rossbach to establish a UN-Habitat regional centre in Slovakia. The new office will focus on sustainable urban development and coordinate efforts across Europe, in cooperation with the UN in Vienna, the EU, and other European partners.

According to Taraba, Slovakia is recognized for its expertise in water management, infrastructure, and urban planning, and the centre reflects trust in the country’s ability to lead policy coordination in these areas. The Environment Minister also emphasized the centre’s potential benefits for Slovak experts, universities, and scientific institutions, offering expanded opportunities for academic cooperation and business engagement.

Slovakia’s candidacy for the centre was announced last year at the World Urban Forum in Cairo.
