Slovakia's parliament continued its 35th session on Monday, opening a debate on proposed amendments to the Slovak Constitution. The proposed changes largely address cultural and ethical issues, including enshrining the concepts of male and female genders in the Constitution and guaranteeing gender equality in terms of pay.
The amendment also aims to address parental rights related to child adoption and participation in educational processes. The government hopes the changes will reinforce Slovakia's sovereignty over value-based and cultural-ethical issues.
Opposition parties, including the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), have expressed support for the amendments, while Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O’Flaherty, warned that constitutional changes should not weaken the protection of human rights in Slovakia.
