Coalition MPs consider allowing special session on PPA subsidy scandal

Coalition MPs are discussing the possibility of allowing a special session of Parliament to be opened on Thursday (June 5) in connection with suspicions of unauthorized subsidies granted by the Agricultural Payment Agency (PPA), Deputy Speaker of Parliament Tibor Gašpar (Smer-SD) said on Wednesday. “But how we proceed further, I would leave for tomorrow,” Gašpar noted. “I mean that there’s a possibility the agenda won’t be approved, or it will be and we’ll proceed to debate with the opposition,” he added.

The session, initiated by opposition MPs, is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. However, at least 76 MPs must be present to open the session and approve the agenda—a number the opposition currently lacks. According to Gašpar, coalition partners view the topic as politically advantageous and are prepared with arguments to demonstrate that the debate over the construction of private estates is merely a continuation of a certain hybrid threat. Gašpar claimed this same strategy was used by the same individuals back in 2018 during the period surrounding the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak.

The goal of the 36th parliamentary session is to adopt a resolution concerning suspicions of misuse of European Union funds provided by the PPA for the construction of lodging facilities under the pretext of promoting agrotourism. The opposition sees the session as the only available means to address the alleged scandal involving privately built estates funded through the PPA.
