Slovakia faces waste crisis as landfill ban approaches

Slovakia will struggle to manage its waste once EU rules ban landfilling in 2035, warns environmental expert Juraj Musil. Speaking in Bratislava, he stressed that although landfills will close, the waste will not disappear. He advocates for modern energy recovery plants, common in countries like Austria or Sweden. While Bratislava and Košice have such facilities, the rest of the country lacks capacity.

In response, a Center for Ecological Management is planned in Skalica, featuring a waste processing plant, reuse center, and educational hub. Currently undergoing environmental review, the project has sparked public concern. Investor GGES assures strict monitoring and transparency, warning that Slovakia must act now or face serious problems handling non-recyclable waste.
