Martina Flašíková to lead Slovak public broadcaster

Martina Flašíková has been elected as the new director-general of Slovak Television and Radio (STVR) for a six-year term, following a vote by the STVR Council. Flašíková, a television producer and daughter of late political marketer Fedor Flašík, received seven of nine votes. According to Denník N, Flašíková presented an 80-page project titled “Point Zero,” in which she criticized the broadcaster’s lack of identity and efficiency. She proposes merging STVR with the state news agency TASR to form a National News Center and wants to enhance regional and foreign coverage. She also called for diverse voices in the media, stating that public broadcasters should not push one "truth" but offer pluralism.

Her appointment raised controversy and opposition parties protested the exclusion of the public and media from the candidate hearings, despite a live stream being provided. While she suggested transforming STVR into a strategic communication hub for the state, Flašíková left many concrete programming details vague. She did, however, hint at cancelling the sports channel if it doesn’t secure major broadcast rights.
