Salaries of politicians and other constitutional officials won't be valorised even in the next year, with another salary freeze approved by the Parliament on Thursday. The amendment in question was submitted to the Parliament by 19 Smer-SD MPs, who calculated that the freeze will save the state €14.1 million, and was subsequently approved by 112 lawmakers.
This means that the MPs, the President, Government members, Supreme Audit Office chair and vice-chair as well as Prosecutor-General will thus receive salary and bonuses pertaining to 2011. Salaries won't rise also for the ombudswoman and judges, who will see remuneration equalling their 2012 levels. This doesn't sit well with judges and the Judicial Council, which claimed that there are no known extraordinary circumstances that would justify such intervention into judges’ salaries. “Such measures must be only provisionary and equal treatment of all societal strata must be maintained,” Judicial Council Chair Jana Bajankova said, adding that economic situation of Slovakia doesn't support the initiative to freeze salaries in the judiciary.
