Slovak opposition parties are criticizing Prime Minister Robert Fico’s planned visit to Moscow on May 9 for WWII commemorations, calling it a betrayal of Slovakia’s values and European unity. Igor Matovič of the Slovensko movement urged opposition leaders to instead travel together to Kyiv on the same day to show solidarity with Ukraine. He called Fico’s visit a “national shame,” especially since no other EU leaders, including Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, plan to attend. Progresívne Slovensko rejected the trip and announced pro-Ukraine rallies across Slovakia. KDH said official visits should follow diplomatic protocol and also condemned Fico’s participation. Fico claims that he is honoring Red Army soldiers who died liberating Slovakia.
