Slovakia marks 20 years since joining the EU on May 1, 2004, following a 2003 referendum in which 92% of voters supported membership. Over the past two decades, the country has enjoyed economic growth, access to EU funds, and joined the eurozone.
European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič emphasized the importance of small nations like Slovakia being part of strong alliances. Parliamentary Speaker Richard Raši warned against “Skexit” discussions, stressing that EU membership is vital for Slovakia’s future. Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár highlighted Slovakia’s role as a sovereign EU member and its attractiveness to investors. The Smer-SD party urged sovereign cooperation and cautioned against removing veto rights in EU decision-making.
