Amnesty International’s 2024 report criticizes Slovakia for failing to ensure affordable housing, restricting freedom of assembly, and inadequately protecting minority rights. Thousands lack access to public housing and marginalized groups like Roma face systemic discrimination. Amnesty also condemns legal changes limiting peaceful protest and media independence, and highlights ongoing police violence against Roma, unaddressed by reforms. The LGBTI continue to face legal and social discrimination, with no progress on recognizing same-sex partnerships or parenthood. According to Amnesty, Slovakia lacks a consent-based legal definition of rape and effective support for victims of forced sterilizations. Environmental commitments are also questioned as the country invests in fossil fuel infrastructure despite EU goals.
