President Pellegrini vetoes bill on so-called COVID amnesties

President Peter Pellegrini has vetoed the law on the so-called COVID amnesties and will return it to Parliament for reconsideration with comments, according to a video he posted on social media on Friday. The bill, intended to "remedy injustices" caused by anti-pandemic measures, was approved by Parliament in early April.

The President argued that the bill would compensate individuals who knowingly violated measures, even in sensitive environments like hospitals and nursing homes. He warned that such compensation would set a dangerous precedent.

In response, Prime Minister Robert Fico recommended that MPs from Smer-SD and the governing coalition vote to override the President’s veto.

The opposition welcomed the veto. Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Šimečka called the bill "a slap in the face" to relatives of COVID-19 victims.
