Slovakia will observe a national day of mourning on Saturday, April 26, 2025, to honour the late Pope Francis, who died on April 21 at the age of 88. The mourning will coincide with his funeral in the Vatican, running from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Slovak government declared the mourning as a gesture of national respect for a global spiritual leader who had a profound impact on public life.
During this time, all national flags will be flown at half-mast, and black flags will accompany them where lowering is not technically possible. Municipalities, regions, schools, and institutions will also follow this protocol. Gambling activities will be suspended, as required by law. While public, private, and sporting events are not officially banned, authorities encourage organisers to maintain a respectful and solemn atmosphere. Events may begin with a minute of silence in memory of the Pope. Loud music, parties, and public displays of disrespect are strongly discouraged. State institutions, the media, and even private businesses are expected to reflect the mourning in their operations and tone.
Prime Minister Robert Fico signed the book of condolences at the Apostolic Nunciature in Bratislava. He praised Pope Francis as a moral compass and a fearless advocate for the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable. Fico also urged the public to reflect on the Pope's messages of peace, love, and authentic faith. President Peter Pellegrini and Speaker of Parliament Richard Raši also paid tribute by signing the condolence book.
