At its meeting on Tuesday, the Judicial Council elected Frantisek Mozner as the new Supreme Court chairperson, with 15 of the 17 Judicial Council members voting for him.
In order to become the Supreme Court head, Mozner must be appointed to the post by President Peter Pellegrini. He's set to replace the current chair Jan Sikuta, whose term of office ends on May 20.
Mozner, who was the head of the court's penal collegium, was proposed as a candidate by 11 Supreme Court judges. Judicial Council chairperson Marcela Kosova announced the election for the post of Supreme Court chair at the beginning of January. The election was preceded by a hearing of the candidates, during which they presented their ideas for their work in the post. Current vice-chair Andrea Moravcikova also ran for Supreme Court chair.
