An analysis of the requirements and capabilities for monitoring bear movements by the military is currently underway, according to Slovak armed forces spokesman Stefan Zemanovic.
"We're prepared to carry out tasks based on a resolution of the Slovak government. Details will be provided after the planning and start of the tasks," said Zemanovic.
Environment Minister Tomas Taraba (a Slovak National Party/SNS nominee) asked Chief-of-General-Staff of the Slovak armed forces Daniel Zmeko for the military's assistance in providing more efficient and faster monitoring of bear movements. The collected data will be used in issuing a decision to eliminate 350 bears based on a report from the State Nature Conservancy of Slovakia.
At the beginning of April, the government declared a state of emergency in 55 districts due to the presence of bears.
