President Peter Pellegrini announced he will not sign a bill granting early retirement and special pensions to prosecutors, particularly objecting to a clause allowing the Prosecutor General to receive a pension after only four years in office. He will return the bill to parliament, stating that such benefits should only follow a full seven-year term.
He also criticized a newly passed law that would compensate individuals fined for violating COVID-19 measures, calling it a dangerous precedent. “How can lawmakers justify this to families who lost loved ones” he asked, while acknowledging the need to review cases where rights may have been violated.
Pellegrini also commented on upcoming changes to NGO legislation, urging a balance between transparency and avoiding excessive bureaucracy. He rejected comparisons of the bill to Russian-style laws, saying such criticism is misguided.
