EU watchdog raises alarms over Slovak detention conditions

The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) has raised concerns following its 2023 visit to Slovakia, citing mistreatment and inadequate conditions in detention facilities. While many detainees reported respectful treatment, some alleged physical abuse during arrest and police custody.

Facilities in Medveďov and Ružomberok were criticized for overcrowding, violence, and poor conditions, particularly affecting foreign nationals. The CPT also flagged excessive surveillance in psychiatric institutions and raised ethical concerns over electroconvulsive therapy at Rožňava Hospital. The Committee acknowledged some improvements but urged Slovakia to ensure accountability and better protections.
