Slovakia considers referendum on defence spending

Slovakia may hold a referendum if increased EU defence spending cannot be used for dual purposes like infrastructure or healthcare, MEP Erik Kaliňák (Smer-SD) said. He emphasized that spending solely on weapons is unacceptable without public backing.

MEP Branislav Ondruš (Hlas-SD) criticized the EU’s proposed €800 billion defence plan as unrealistic, warning it could cut funding for social programs and regional development.

In contrast, MEP Ľudovít Ódor (Progressive Slovakia) supported greater defence investment, stressing Europe must be able to protect itself if U.S. support falters. He called for a unified strategy before setting spending targets.
