Government okays draft on NGOs

The Government agreed with the proposal of coalition SNS party on non-governmental organisations. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday that there was a consensus on the topic of controlling the financing of NGOs. He took exception to the Via Iuris organisation, which, in his view, was trying to challenge the draft law in question. Fico pointed out that the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic had prepared a detailed analysis. "Via Iuris is blatantly lying and misleading," he accused the organisation. He did not give details.

On Thursday, a march in Bratislava against the "Russian law" is to be held. The civic association Peace for Ukraine is organizing it in response to the draft on NGOs.

The Prime Minister stressed that the government and the coalition respect the right to assemble;  however, the public should not be misled. He added that he could not believe his ears when he heard that the reason for convening the gatherings was "some Russian law." According to him, the aim of the Slovak proposal is only to specify control mechanisms so that they know how NGOs are financed and who gives them money. Fico also emphasized that the draft law was drafted in accordance with EU rules.

Finally, he invited the citizens to a meeting at Bratislava's Slavín, which will take place on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Bratislava on 4 April at 4.30 pm. According to him, such a meeting makes sense.
