Education Minister plans to change system of secondary school exit examinations

The Education Ministry plans to revisit the system of secondary school leaving examinations, with the aim of rebuilding the entire concept by the end of this decade, Education Minister Tomas Drucker (Hlas-SD) told the media before the government session on Wednesday.

"If we wish to change the 'maturita' system, then such changes require some preparatory period, and then there's the need to amend curricula, and hence the entire system of education from primary school level and its follow-up at secondary school level. This might take about ten years," said Drucker, who plans to present a basic road map for the project by the end of the year.

The minister detailed that the plan calls for the introduction of maths as a mandatory leaving examinations subject, not only for specialised maths schools, but also for all prep schools, secondary industrial schools and technical schools.

The Minister also announced that a one-day mid-year holiday for schools will be reintroduced.

"A mid-year holiday will be back. I am signing the draft decree to reintroduce this holiday. There's a need to make a full stop after the end of the first half of a school year," stated the minister. The decree should take effect as of April 1 of this year.

The mid-year holiday was dropped from the school holiday schedule as of May 30, 2022. "However, practice over two years has shown that a mid-year holiday is justified, even if it lasts for only one day," stated the Education Ministry.
