Prime Minister Robert Fico has called on the European Commission to take a stance on Romania's presidential election dispute, warning that failure to act could harm the EU’s credibility. Fico’s comments followed the rejection of Călin Georgescu’s re-registration as a candidate for a new presidential election scheduled for May. Georgescu was the winner of the annulled first round of elections, which took place last year. Fico argued that Georgescu should receive European protection if he is being mistreated for his views. The Romanian Electoral Commission’s decision to annul the vote, citing foreign interference, has sparked controversy, with Georgescu facing criminal charges. The rescheduled first round will take place on May 4, with a possible second round on May 18.
