Slovak authorities call for peace talks

As of Saturday at noon, representatives of the Slovak political scene have commented on the meeting between US President Donald Trump, US Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

President Peter Pellegrini believes that Ukraine will start constructive peace talks. He welcomed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s idea that “It is time to hold an emergency EU-US summit on Ukraine and European security,” as the President’s spokesperson Patricia Medved Macikova informed.

In his status on social media, Prime Minister Robert Fico reiterated that “Slovakia would not support Ukraine either financially or militarily so that it could continue the war. Unlike others, we are interested in an immediate ceasefire and intensive peace negotiations."

Regarding the support of European leaders, Hlas-SD leader and Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok noted that Europe should keep a cool head, as the escalation of tension will not help anyone. Environment Minister Tomas Taraba finds the Ukrainian President’s behaviour arrogant.

Former President Zuzana Čaputová expressed her support to the people of Ukraine who are “defending their right to live”. Opposition SaS MP Marian Viskupic talks about the non-standard position and acting of Donald Trump. Viskupic says that it is not possible to ignore the President of the USA as he is the most powerful man in the world, it is, however, necessary to find the appropriate style of communication. Christian Democrats call for the need to debate. Opposition PS party member Ivan Korcok thinks that the White house meeting showed that “The US administration really wants to end the war, unfortunately, we have to admit now that they want to end it at whatever price Ukraine and the whole of Europe pay. This is very bad news,” concluded the former Foreign Minister.
