Energy: Slovak gas storage capacity down to 46%

Since the beginning of the year, gas reserves in Slovak storage facilities have declined from 75.17% to 46.05%, equivalent to 17.03 terawatt-hours (TWh). The Nafta reservoir, which holds most of Slovakia’s gas reserves (14.9 TWh), is 49.61% full. Meanwhile, the Pozagas reservoir, storing 2.13 TWh, is 30.68% full. These figures come from Gas Infrastructure Europe, which provides daily updates on gas storage levels across Europe.

The decline is not limited to Slovakia but is part of a broader trend across Europe. At the beginning of the year, the average gas storage level in the European Union was 71.81%; it has since dropped to 40.6%, reflecting typical winter consumption patterns. Croatia currently has the lowest gas storage levels, while Portugal has the highest.

In 2024, Slovakia's total natural gas consumption reached 47.26 TWh, with large consumers using 27.17 TWh, households consuming 12.85 TWh, and small and medium-sized businesses accounting for the remainder.

Nafta, Slovakia's largest underground gas storage operator, plays a key role in securing gas supplies for both Slovakia and Europe. Its storage facilities are a strategic asset for energy security.
