Poland and Slovakia strengthen defence cooperation

Slovak and Polish Defence Ministers Robert Kaliňák and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz signed an agreement on Monday to enhance cooperation in the arms industry, TASR learned from their joint press conference in Warsaw.

According to the Polish defence minister, their discussions focused on four key areas:
1. Slovakia’s interest in acquiring Polish Piorun portable air defence systems.
2. Strengthening joint production of 155mm-calibre ammunition, with Poland recognizing Slovakia’s significant manufacturing capacity in this area.
3. Exploring the joint production of an armoured personnel carrier based on Poland’s Rosomak vehicle, featuring a Slovak turret.
4. Slovakia’s potential procurement of Korean K-2 tanks, which Poland will manufacture in a modified version domestically.

Kaliňák emphasized the strong and enduring Slovak-Polish relationship, stating that cooperation extends beyond political cycles. He praised Poland as a leader in defence, noting its proactive approach to meeting NATO spending targets without waiting for changes in U.S. policy.

Marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, condemned violations of international law, and praised the bravery of Ukrainian soldiers.
