Slovakia is facing legal action from the European Commission due to delays in simplifying the permitting process for green energy sources. Meanwhile, the contribution of renewable energy sources (RES) to electricity consumption in the European Union saw its highest growth in 20 years in 2023, according to Eurostat, the Slovak Association of Sustainable Energy pointed out on Friday.
According to the association, Slovakia has failed to incorporate the 2023 directive into national legislation. This directive requires member states to set clear deadlines for permitting processes for specific RES technologies.
Slovakia ranks sixth to last among the 27 EU member states in terms of the share of RES in gross electricity consumption. It is also one of the countries most dependent on imports of gas, coal, and nuclear fuel.
