Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Wednesday criticized the informal European summit on Ukraine and European security in Paris, calling it a meeting of "friends of war," and argued that Slovakia has no place at such "combat meetings." Fico also conveyed his concerns to European Council President António Costa via phone. He believes the EU is unnecessarily nervous after U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance's comments in Munich and the exclusion of the EU from peace talks between the U.S. and Russia on Ukraine.
Fico suggested that the EU should hold a formal summit with all member states to face reality and make decisions that reflect the changed world situation. He pointed out that the West supported the war for three years, but with a new U.S. president bringing peace talks, Europe should step back and allow the U.S. and Russia to negotiate.
He also stressed that the EU should take responsibility for the past three years and work constructively toward a peace agreement that benefits Ukraine, with full Ukrainian participation. Fico affirmed his commitment to an independent Slovak foreign policy focused on peace and international law and emphasized that he would be engaging with both the EU and other global powers.
