PM Fico: Slovakia doesn't send its own gas to Ukraine

Slovakia does not send any gas to Ukraine, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) stated in a social media video on Wednesday, responding to a misleading headline by STVR News that claimed Slovakia was supplying gas to Ukraine.

However, in the news report itself, Economy Minister Denisa Saková (Hlas) denied that the Slovak government or Slovak companies were involved in supplying gas to Kyiv. "These are Czech and German companies. The Slovak Gas Industry (SPP) does not supply gas to Ukraine, and I have no information that any other Slovak company is doing so," said Saková, who held talks with Russian representatives in St. Petersburg last December regarding gas supplies to Slovakia.

According to STVR, Ukraine currently imports 17 million cubic meters of gas per day, with most of it flowing through Hungarian, Slovak, and Polish gas infrastructure. Energy analyst Radovan Potočár from Energie-portal.sk told the public broadcaster that this situation has arisen "mainly due to recent Russian attacks, which have weakened Ukraine’s ability to produce and distribute gas within its territory."
