Police not involved in physical attack on homeless person

An investigator of the Internal Affairs Inspectorate (UIS) ruled out any participation of police officers in the physical assault on a homeless person in Bratislava, who died afterwards, according to UIS spokesperson Andrea Dobiasova.

"The investigator reached this conclusion after his examination of evidence. After thoroughly examining the existing evidence, the investigator of the UIS ruled out any participation of police officers in the physical attack on the aggrieved party that might have caused his death," added Dobiasova.

The Ukrainian citizen was found with head injuries in the early morning hours of Thursday (January 30) near a shopping mall in Bratislava and succumbed to his injuries the next day. The police have launched a criminal prosecution for manslaughter.

"The Ukrainian side does not rule out that this crime could have been committed on the basis of the victim's ethnic affiliation in the context of unfounded incitement of anti-Ukrainian sentiments in Slovak society, and considers this tragic incident a gross violation of fundamental human rights and the principles of the rule of law. We call on the relevant authorities of the Slovak Republic to ensure an impartial, thorough and prompt investigation into the circumstances of the death of our citizen and to inform the embassy and the public about its progress and results," reads a statement released by the embassy in Bratislava.
