Volkswagen Slovakia has produced its four millionth car: a blue Volkswagen Touareg powered by a V6 TS1 engine, which is now heading for a customer in Japan, TASR has learnt from the plant's spokesman Vladimir Machalik.
Cars manufactured in Slovakia go to as many as 148 countries, with each car customised in order to cater to the special requirements of the destination market. The largest markets for the vehicles from Slovakia are Germany, China and the USA. The Bratislava-based plant is the only car plant in the world to produce cars of five brands under a single roof. The first, pre-series car was made at the plant in December 1991, with serial production launched on February 14, 1992. The first car model made at the plant was a Volkswagen Passat variant. Output in those days amounted to 15 vehicles per day and 2,100 per year. The plant broke the threshold of 100,000 cars produced per year in 1998. The millionth car - also a Volkswagen Touareg - rolled off the assembly line on May 28, 2003.
