Opposition fails to open session for Fico's removal

The opposition in Slovakia attempted once again to remove Prime Minister Robert Fico on Tuesday, January 28, but was unable to open the session after two failed attempts. Initially, 66 opposition MPs showed up, but the number dropped to 64 half an hour later, making the Parliament unable to meet the required quorum. The coalition had already announced it would not participate in the session. The opposition has been critical of Fico's government over its consolidation measures and Slovakia's shifting foreign policy orientation. This marks the second attempt in a short period, with the first one last week interrupted by the reading of a classified Slovak Information Service report.
