Interior Minister warns of threat of state coup in Slovakia

The threat of a state coup is real, according to Interior Minister and Hlas-SD leader Matúš Šutaj Eštok. A report from the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS), set to be discussed by the Security Council on January 23, highlights activities aimed at destabilizing the country and creating chaos. "Bomb threats in timed waves, an assassination attempt on the Prime Minister, efforts to attack critical energy infrastructure, cyberattacks on state databases, and protests that appear spontaneous but show signs of targeted coordination—all point to an attempt to manipulate public opinion and create chaos," stated Šutaj Eštok.

The minister called it a carefully orchestrated operation designed to undermine democracy and disrupt state functioning, asserting that evidence supports the claim of an impending coup. He guaranteed full cooperation from law enforcement and emphasized the government's readiness to act decisively to protect the country. Prime Minister Robert Fico has convened the Security Council to address the Secret Service (SIS) report and adopt preventive measures to prevent escalation. Opposition parties, however, have criticized Fico’s statements, accusing him of fearmongering to deflect from his own failures.
