Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have opened discussions about supplying Slovakia with Russian gas through the TurkStream pipeline. During their meeting in Ankara, Erdogan pledged to consider Slovakia's energy needs and facilitate talks between Slovak, Turkish, and Russian officials.
Fico criticized Ukraine’s decision to halt Russian gas transit through its territory and praised Erdogan’s willingness to assist. According to him, Slovakia could utilize TurkStream’s second pipeline, which supplies gas to countries like Bulgaria and Romania. Fico also urged Turkey to host peace negotiations on Ukraine.
“Above all, fair peace must be one that will suit both sides, a fair peace must be one that also respects the causes of this war," declared Fico.
Cultural collaboration between Slovakia and Turkey took a step forward as well with the signing of a memorandum of understanding. Slovak Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová and her Turkish counterpart Mehmet Nuri Ersoy agreed to deepen cooperation in areas such as folklore, literature and library exchanges from 2025 to 2029.
