Slovakia wins legal battle against Interblue Group

Slovakia's Environment Ministry has won a long-running lawsuit filed by Interblue Group AG, which sought €34.6 million. The case, dating back to 2016, started because of a disputed sale of emission quotas in 2008.

The Slovak Supreme Court ruled in favor of the ministry, awarding compensation for court costs exceeding two million euros. The case began when Interblue sued the ministry over the sale of 15 million tons of emission quotas to the company at a rate of €5.05 per tonne. Slovakia's deal was less profitable compared to neighboring countries, with Interblue expected to make €47 million from reselling the quotas to Japan.

The Bratislava District Court initially rejected the lawsuit in December 2020, and the Regional Court upheld the decision in January 2022.
