Parliament will soon elect a new candidate for the role of Prosecutor General. This should happen at its next regular session. Prime Minister Robert Fico announced this after Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. “There is no legal obstacle why Parliament could not elect a Prosecutor General,” Fico stated.
Due to the Constitutional Court‘s injunction to suspend the amendment that was aimed at unblocking the court and President Gasparovic’s statement that he would never appoint Jozef Centes to the office, Fico claims this is all new circumstances which call for this action, as otherwise we would never have a Prosecutor General. The Prime Minister did not mention any specific name of the SMER party candidate in mind. Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paška announced that MPs are free to submit their nominations for the new Prosecutor General by June 16.
