PM Robert Fico defends Parliament Vice-Chair’s views on the EU

The European Union (EU) and NATO are crucial to Slovakia, but criticism of their direction remains valid, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) stated in a video defending Parliament Vice-Chair and coalition MP Tibor Gašpar who recently stated that Slovakia might withdraw from the EU.

"Slovakia must prepare for various scenarios," Fico said, noting concerns over efforts by some European leaders to form a superstate that could severely limit national sovereignty. He warned of potential risks, including the EU’s dissolution, drawing parallels to the swift collapse of the Warsaw Pact.

Fico criticized opposition Progressive Slovakia representatives’ visit to Kyjiv and their meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj. He dismissed claims of gas transit negotiations, suggesting Zelensky is unwilling to cooperate and linking this stance to the attack on the Turkstream pipeline.

The prime minister plans to discuss safeguarding east-west pipelines during his visit to Turkey with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and in talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He also hinted at possible Slovak countermeasures, such as vetoing further EU financial aid to Ukraine.
