Government redirects 400 million euros from U.S. Steel project to public services

The government approved changes to the recovery plan worth approximately 400 million euros. Instead of helping U. S. Steel with modernization, which cannot be completed due to unresolved ownership changes, the funds will be redirected to hospitals, social service facilities, and kindergartens.

The cancellation of the decarbonization project intended for the Košice steelworks freed up 292 million euros, while an additional 66 million euros will be saved by not purchasing land in national parks. A further 20 million euros will be saved from the reconstruction of court buildings.

More than half of the obtained sum, 212 million euros, is set to go toward new hospitals. Social service residential facilities are to receive 48 million euros, and kindergartens will get 20 million euros.

These changes still need to be approved by the European Commission, and Vice Prime Minister Peter Kmeč’s office states that negotiations with the Commission have taken place.
