Orthodox Christians in Slovakia, who follow the Julian calendar, are celebrating Christmas on January 7th. The Orthodox Church in Slovakia has almost 50 000 followers, most of them living on the East. In the lead-up to Christmas, believers observe a 40-day fast known as the "roždestvenský pôst," during which they abstain from meat, dairy, and eggs. On Christmas Eve, families gather for a special meal that includes traditional foods like pirohy and mushroom soup. Unlike other Christian traditions, Orthodox Christmas meals are prepared without using any kitchen utensils, with dough pulled by hand. Following the meal, many attend the "Veľké povečerie," a special evening service.
