Lawmakers with several posts will receive a salary just for one, namely for the mandate in Parliament and get a minimum wage for all their other jobs. Some Slovak MPs sitting in Parliament are also mayors or heads of higher territorial units and have been receiving numerous salaries from taxpayers’ money.
Prime Minister Fico, who drew up the amendment claims that this legal status has been subject to criticism and discontent for a long time. The Cabinet approved this on Wednesday however with a number of exceptions. MPs will be allowed to receive full salaries for other than political positions. This will be applied for those MPs who are pedagogues, artists or hold scientific and similar positions alongside their job in the Slovak Parliament. Moreover, exempt from the law are deputies of local and municipal parliaments.
