The Investment, Regional Development, and Informatisation Ministry has signed a €56.2 million contract, funded by the EU's Fair Transformation Fund, to harness geothermal energy for heating the city of Košice, State Secretary Michal Kalinak announced on Friday.
The project, led by MH Teplárenský Holding, includes a 15-kilometer heating pipeline and a distribution station linking a geothermal source near Svinica and Ďurkov to Košice’s heating plant. Completion is scheduled for July 2028.
Kalinak highlighted that Košice will pioneer the use of geothermal energy in Slovakia, boosting the share of renewable energy in its central heating system. The initiative aims to provide cleaner, more stable, and affordable heating, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and decrease Slovakia’s reliance on fossil fuels.
