Christmas tree comes to Bratislava

Despite unseasonably summery temperatures, a 13 metre tall Christmas tree appeared in the centre of Bratislava’s old town on Wednesday morning. The Spruce tree was a gift to the city from the owner of Rusovský gardens.

Although the tree is typically installed in early November in preparation for the upcoming Christmas markets, Wednesday’s sunny weather and high of 18 degrees Celsius made this symbol of winter appear somewhat out of place. The tree was cut down early this morning and subsequently escorted by flatbed truck to the town square. “It was lying on the truck bed, which is 12.5 meters and it stuck out by around one meter”, said City Forest director Vladimir Kutka. The tree has been aged at about 35 years, with a 38 cm thick trunk.
