Ombudsman to submit special report on police brutality against detainees

Ombudsman Robert Dobrovodsky will present a special report at a parliament session regarding violations of protection against torture and inhuman and degrading treatment to which individuals detained by the police have been subjected in response to an increased number and severity of such complaints.

"Given the fact that the number of complaints in this area is increasing, and according to the established facts, the violation of fundamental rights and freedoms is of a serious nature, I will use my legal authority to submit a special report in the House," stated the Ombudsman, who wants the report to be discussed at the first parliamentary session next year.

Dobrovodsky stressed that he respects the work of the police and the fact that they have the right to use legal force under certain circumstances. "When using legal force, there's a need to respect human-rights frameworks, but my knowledge suggests that these conditions aren't always met," he stated.

The report, he said, will include legislative and non-legislative proposals for improving the situation.

The ombudsman wants to look for inspiration in Austria, which has experience with the use of body cameras by police officers.
