Slovak Vice-president of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič will lead the next talks on supplies of Russian gas to Ukraine. Šefčovič took part in the trilateral meeting in Brussels on Thursday, which resulted in an agreement on the renewal of gas supplies for Ukraine in winter.
Šefčovič described the talks that were concluded on the last day of Jose Manuel Barroso's Commission's term as extremely difficult. “It was due to several factors. One of them was a lack of trust between the countries [Russia and Ukraine] and between Russia's Gazprom and Ukraine's Naftogaz,” said Šefčovič, adding that the talks got a more specific shape after the Commission entered in.
