“Junk food” should disappear from school cafeterias. This stems from a draft amendment to the Education Act, approved on Wednesday in Parliament.
Due to the amendment it will be prohibited to sell at schools fast food types of meals, foods that are too salty, some bakery and confectionery products, ice cream, popsicles, beverages containing alcohol and caffeine, energy, flavoured and sweetened drinks and similar foods and drinks. Violations of the law can be penalized by a fine from 50 to 500 EUR. The Food Chamber Slovakia warned that this legal norm is not based on any expert conclusions and its adoption was not preceded by any professional discussion. Despite this, the amendment did pass the vote of MPs in Parliament and will come into effect as of 1 January, 2015.
