The Slovak Catholic Charity (SKCH) is continuing to assist troubled families in Ukraine however it stresses that with winter fast approaching, many families there are still in dire need of support and have no option but to rely on the help of others.
SKCH, in collaboration with the Czech based Olomouc Archdiocese Charity, is sending a shipment of material aid to Ukraine’s capital city, Kiev. At present fundraising is continuing. “So far we have collected over €10,000, part of which has already been handed over to the sisters of the Congregation of Jesus, of which members in Uzhhorod and Mukacheve have been providing clothing, shoes, toiletries and other items specific to individuals’ needs," said Tomáš Horváth in an interview with the TASR news agency. He added that people lack warm clothes, toiletries, nappies and other goods that cannot be sourced locally. “Often the shops there have been looted and they have nothing. The country has about half a million inhabitants displaced and local governments can’t cope with the situation, nor do they have adequate resources to help. Some owners of chalets have decided to help refugees and provide them with accommodation and meals free of charge. Their assistance is only temporary however, and these people will need more permanent solutions”, added Horváth.
